The short version

Legal on roads & bike paths.

No license. No registration. Just pedal, assist, and ride responsibly. Six rules cover it.

  • 01

    Pedal-assist only

Motor engages only while you're pedalling.

  • 02

    25 km/h cut-off

Power assistance cuts out at 25 km/h on public roads.

  • 03

    Throttle to 6 km/h

Throttle is permitted up to 6 km/h — pedal beyond that.

  • 04

    Helmet required

Mandatory in every state and territory. No exceptions.

  • 05

    Passengers

Only on bikes built for it — extended saddle + rear pegs.

  • 06

    Local rules apply

Each state varies slightly. Check yours before you ride.

Road-Legal

Built to AU public-road spec.

Our road-legal models meet Australian public-road standards (EN15194): 250W continuous output, pedal-assist with throttle to 6 km/h, and a 25 km/h power cut-off. Ride them on roads, bike paths, and shared paths.

Private Property

Higher-output, off-road only.

If your bike exceeds 250W continuous output (500W in some states) or you ride with throttle alone, it's legal for private property only — your own track, farm, or land. Always check local laws before riding anywhere road-related.

Ride responsibly

Ride smart. Ride legal.

Helmets, lights, reflectors, good judgment —never out of style.

Stay visible. Stay alert. Stay out of trouble. Regulations are subject to change without notice — it's your responsibility to know and follow local laws wherever you ride.

Are RatKat bikes road-legal in Australia?
Yes. All RatKat e-bikes are sold in a road-legal configuration that meets the 250W continuous / 25 km/h pedal-assist limits required across Australian states. A compliance card and AU manual ship with every bike.
What about throttle and off-road use?
Models with throttle-assist are limited to 6 km/h walk-assist for on-road use. Off-road use on private property is at the rider's discretion and must comply with local laws.
